The most common approach is to prepare the backdrop first (the walls, ceilings and floors), then add the major furniture pieces (sofas, wing chairs, beds, and so on), fill in with window treatments and smaller furnishings, and last accessorize.
Many people opt to stretch out their decorating over a period of several years. Most designers are well aware that few people can afford to redecorate a whole house or apartment in one fell swoop, and we are happy to work out a long-term decorating plan. By taking the long-term approach to decorating, you are likely to get more design for your money.
