The most common approach is to prepare the backdrop first

When looking for interior designers, be completely forthcoming about your budget. You'll get the most design for your money if you are honest about what you can afford to spend. If your budget is truly small, you'd probably be better off hiring a designer simply as a consultant. The designer can prepare drawings, outline furniture purchases, select fabrics and colors, and then you can implement the plans.

Design studios connected with retail stores require that you buy a certain amount of furnishings from the store. The store pays your designer a commission based on how much you spend. Some stores also charge an hourly rate for any special services such as accompanying a client to an antique store or shopping trips for particular accessories.

There is no set pattern to the decoration process. Some designers begin by selecting colors and fabrics, and others start with walls and floors, still others choose one distinctive piece of furniture or an extraordinary architectural feature as a jumping-off point.
